The South Tyrolean photographer Roland Reinstadler spent many years documenting the life of a mountain farming family in the Passeier Valley, a life shaped by the weather and the rhythm of the seasons. Through striking images, Gspell 111 tells the story of a family that still lives in the mountains of South Tyrol in a deeply traditional way. While the patriarch Siegfried and his son Florian stay on the farm year-round, cut off from the outside world in winter, Katharina, the wife and mother, spends only the summer months on the centuries-old farm. The book offers a rare glimpse into a once harsh and demanding mountain life — a way of living that is now almost extinct. This family truly represents “The Last of Their Kind.”
